Pacifier Weaning

Five pacifier weaning tips for busy moms.

As a super-busy mom of two wonderful children, I know how difficult it can be to wean your children from their beloved binky. My children LOVED their pacifiers—they found comfort and security in them. So naturally I struggled with the idea of weaning them from their pacifiers cold turkey.

My goal was to find a way to make the whole pacifier weaning process a loving and nurturing experience. Following are some of the best tips I discovered to make going paci-free a positive experience.

Five Pacifier Weaning Tips That Work

1) Have a positive attitude and have fun with it.

Sounds like simple advice, but this is a huge key to having success. Don’t approach the pacifier weaning process with fear, stress or worry. Your children will pick up on this immediately. Be confident in your instincts as a mom and just try to have some fun.

2) Have a plan and develop a nightly ritual.

It’s so important to have a plan in place before you get started. We are all creatures of habit. Your children are no different. That’s why I developed a 7-day ritual during the pacifier weaning process. After tucking the kids in, I would tell them a story about the Binky Fairy every night for 7 days.

3) Tell a story about the Binky Fairy.

Children love stories. And I decided to use this to my advantage. So I came up with a story about the magical Binky Fairy. When it was time for children to become BIG, the Binky Fairy would come at night and give them a special friend who would keep their pacifier safe.

4) Help your child understand they’re getting BIG.

A major part of helping your child through the pacifier weaning process is to help them understand that they are now becoming big. And a part of being big is not needing to use their binky anymore. Continue to hammer home this idea to them and reinforce it throughout the day and especially at night before they go to sleep.

5) Limit the use of their pacifier.

The night before we started the 7-day process for pacifier weaning, I searched my house for all our extra pacifiers and threw them away. I let my children have their favorite pacifier, but I limited their use to nap times and at night.

There you have it. Five tips for pacifier weaning that worked for me.

I hope it helps.
